Current Childbirth Classes in Seattle
- 10 Classes, Once A Week, for 2 hours
- Classes limited to 8 couples
- Wednesday’s September 9th- November 11th 7pm-9pm
- All pregnant ladies must be due after November 11th 2009!
Course Content:
- Introduction to The Bradley Method – We go over the Bradley Method history, philosophy and goals. It is a great time to get to know the other members of the class and begin to study things you can do to keep yourself healthy and low risk during pregnancy. We introduce pregnancy exercises and talk about ways to handle pain and avoid uncessary pain in labor.
- Nutrition in Pregnancy – This class focuses on a making a healthy diet for pregnancy. Understanding what nutrients are essential in pregnancy as well as what quantities is a major part of this class. We review pregnancy exercies from last week and talk about sex during pregnancy, breastfeeding and continue talking about how to stay healthy and low risk during pregnancy.
- Pregnancy and The Coach’s Role – This class is focused ont he anatomy and physiology of pregnancy as well as common discomforts and how to handle them naturally. We also cover the Coach’s Role during pregnancy and labor, the importance of natural childbirth, bonding, and the father’s role in breasfeeding.
- Introduction to First Stage Labor – In this class we concentrate on how your body is working during first stage labor. We teach basic coaching techniques and instruct you on how to practice together. We also cover what may be standard hospital admitting and prepping procedures.
- Introducation to Second Stage Labor – In this class we concentrate on how your body works during second stage labor as well as touching briefly on thrid stage. Basic pushing techniques and second stage positions, as well as the coach’s role, will be discussed.
- Planning Your Birth – We cover how to make a birth plan including what choices their are for you to make, the importance of evaluating your feelings and listing your priorities and meeting with your medical team to discuss your choices in a positive way. We also do a first stage labor rehearsal in this class.
- Variations and Complications/Postpartum Preparation – We cover various complications including cesarean surgery discussing: how to avoid these problems if possible, how to evaluate whether it is necessary to intervene, and how to handle interventions that become necessary. We also cover information on taking care of yourself after your baby is born.
- Advanced First Stage Techniques – We cover advanced coaching techniques dealing directly with handling first stage labor. We do a labor rehearsal and do some role playing.
- Advanced Second Stage Techniques – We do an advanced labor rehearsal and pull together all the information your have learned so far.
- Being a Great Coach/ Preparing for Your New Family – We go over the B.E.S.T techniques for labor and birth and go through a comprehensive review of the most importnant points you will use while in labor. We cover Emergency Childbirth as well. We will do one last advanced labor rehearsal and conclude with talking about newborn care, mothering, fathering, breastfeeding, how to handle a crying baby, and adjusting to the many changes you will face during this time.
